Doctor-owned hospitals survive latest threat

Physician-owned hospitals in this go-around have prevailed over the latest legislative
threat to their survival. A provision seeking to ban physician-owned hospitals did
not make it into the final version of a bill that was signed by President Obama
last week to re-authorize funding of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
The Metroplex has 21 such existing facilities and more than 20 in development, according
to the Physician Hospitals of America, a trade group. “We are definitely pleased
it got dropped from the bill,” said Debbie Hay, president of the physician-owned
Texas Institute for Surgery in Dallas and president of the board of directors for
Texas Physician Hospitals Advocacy Center in Austin.
