Congressman Eric Cantor visits TIS

August 12, 2008 - Texas Institute for Surgery hosted Congressman Eric Cantor. Congressman Cantor, who is a fourth-term congressman representing the Seventh District of Virginia, toured the facility followed by a discussion of key issues with hospital administrators, physicians and a recent patient over lunch. He recently won re-election to Congress in November 2006. In December 2002 Eric was selected to serve as Chief Deputy Majority Whip, the highest appointed position in the House Representatives. As Chief Deputy Whip, Eric has a seat at the House Republican Leadership table. Eric holds a seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, prescription drugs for seniors, health care and welfare reform.
 


Dr. Bryan Pruitt elected president of the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgeons

Bryan Pruitt, MD, was elected president of the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgeons. The organization is a group of Dallas-area plastic surgeons committed to excellence in plastic surgery, patient safety and patient education. All of the members of the Dallas Society of Plastic Surgery are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
 


KRLD features TIS surgeon

A recent KRLD 1080 afternoon broadcast included a live interview with Dr. Richard L. Weiner, chairman of neurosurgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Dr. Weiner spoke about brain cancer and what treatments are available to those suffering from the disease. The story was based on the news that Sen. Edward Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.

Texas Institute for Surgery at PHD Hosts Legislators.

During the month of August, Texas Institute for Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas (TIS) hosted a number of legislative visitors from both the State and Federal level.  U.S. Senators Kay Bailey- Hutchison and Senator John Cornyn, as well as State Representatives Jim Jackson District 115 and Allen Vaught District 107 toured TIS on separate occasions.  In addition, TIS physicians and hospital representatives from Texas Health Resources, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, TpHR, USPI, Baylor Frisco and USMD were also present. 

TIS President, Debbie Hay and physician governmental liaison Dr. John Gill were able to present these legislators with facts on how physician-owned hospitals work.  The partnership between large hospital systems and physician owned facilities work together to deliver safe, quality patient care. The visits were very productive and demonstrated the positive impact of specialty hospitals both in patient care and the community.

John T. Gill, MD, Elected President of the Texas Orthopaedic Association

Austin - Orthopaedic surgeon John T. Gill, MD, was elected President of the Texas Orthopaedic Association during its 71st Annual Meeting, held May 10-13th, at the Four Seasons in Austin. Dr. Gill also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, headquartered in Chicago.

Specializing in sports medicine, Dr. Gill is currently an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice at the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. After earning his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Gill served his internship and residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine and surgery of the knee at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston before opening his clinic, Dallas Sports Medicine Specialists, in 1988.

"I am honored to represent my colleagues as President of the Texas Orthopaedic Association," said Dr. Gill. "I look forward to the opportunity to serve our profession and our patients, and to help enhance the musculoskeletal care that we deliver."

Active in numerous professional societies, Dr. Gill will serve as Chairman of the Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2008. He currently serves in both the Texas Medical Association and the American Medical Association House of Delegates and is a former board member of the Dallas County Medical Society.

Dr. Gill is an active volunteer in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Summer Musicals and as chairman of the Texas Healthcare Task Force. He is a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and is a team physician for the Dallas Independent School District.
